7th Sea Second edition Review [English]

Who wouldn’t want to be a pirate,
finding treasure and retire on tropical paradise?

Or maybe pirate life is not for you. perhaps you want to become a.

Bravely musketeer fighting for honor and your kingdom?

or

An explorer sailing around the world discover many secrets in the age of sail?

If this is what you wanted to try just once in a lifetime 7th Sea Second edition is the perfect game to try.

That’s right today I’m going to review the 7th Sea(2e) Roleplaying game. (Which you may think I’m trying to sell the game, but I just want to tell you about the game that I like.)

And by the way, I also post the same content just in my native Thai language so if you prefer to read Thai and feel lost in English remember X marks the spot.

Now back to our game.

In 7th sea [Created by John wick //and no not the one that loves his dog.] you can do all of that Bold Phrase Above^. because this is the game of Swashbuckling Action and Intrigue Game. Don’t know what swashbuckling is? Remember

  • Pirate of the Caribbean – The pirate movies we love with always drunk captain called Jack Sparrow, with swordplay, cannonball flying through the air, curse, gold and a Great Theme Song, Savvy?
  • Sinbad the Sailor – Good old Sinbad with a fantastic adventure, magical place and monster in his seven voyages such a perfect fit for a game that called the 7th sea, right?
  • The Three Musketeers – “One for all, all for one” Nuff said.
  • Robin hood – King of Outlaws and prince of good fellows! And don’t forget his band of Merry men.

Those above are goods example of swashbuckling so I’ll move on okay.

The game now uses Roll and Keep system, which you will roll a pool of d10 base on your stat and skill and keep the combined dice that are 10 or above. And trust me nothing feels better that roll a pile of dice on your table.

After that, you spend the dice you combined (They call it a Raise) to do some action. And that’s it all of this game system, Roll a dice -> Combine the number -> Spend it to do stuff.

Here’s the example

“I want to jump over the balcony to a chandelier and escape the burning building.”

So I roll 10 dice = 4, 6, 8, 7, 5, 9, 4, 6, 5, 9. And combine it to a set of 10.

  • 4+6
  • 4+6
  • 5+5
  • 8+7
  • 9+9

Now I spend it on the thing I said.

  • 4+6 = Jump over the balcony to a chandelier.
  • 4+6 = Grab my pistol and shoot the metal that lock chandelier in place.
  • 5+5 = Swing my chandelier to the window and jump off of it.
  • 8+7 = Make a landing move onto a haystack below.
  • 9+9 = Drink a rum in my coat.

See, the game was Simple, Fast, Best on Cinematic and Narrative style.

Don’t forget this is a game called 7th Sea so you also have a rule for a ship, naval combat, how to manage your crew and so on. Also magic, monster, and curse to fight with. But all of them still use the same thing, Roll and Keep.

And the last thing. The arts in this game are Fantastic!
